Roof beams on

We were running out of time (and expectations of good weather), so the walls stopped at about 3 feet high. The long beams to support the roof rafters are in place. They were 12 feet long and we had to use a different technique to make the first cuts because our slabbing rails were too short. We need to work on that some, because these ones didn't turn out quite as well.

Roof rafters completed

The roof rafters are complete. They're 4X6, which we thought was serious overkill at the time. Since getting home, I've been reading up on timber frame construction, and for the spacing, they could be a bit smaller, but not a bunch. Of course, as a non-residential building, it doesn't really need to be built to the same level of safety.

Roof getting closed in

We decided to put a simple roof on to keep out most of the snow and rain until we get back to finish it. We used the slabs left over from making the beams, plus a few logs that we turned completely into planks.

Roof nearly finished

The roof is done except for cutting off the excess on the ends. We didn't fill in the gables on the theory that moisture was going to get inside (roofs a tad leaky..), and that way things would dry out more quickly. And less work to undo when we want to make the walls higher.
